  • I had the great pleasure of meeting for lunch with Alan Clutter (see MailBag, page 10) in August, 07. We had corresponded a few times and he happened to be in town, so we planned to meet and had a very pleasant visit.

Hey, Alan! I hope it was as good for you as it was for me - to shake hands, share a meal and talk about the old days, that is.
If I'm ever in Kankekee, Illinois I'll look you up and return your kindness!

    New Faces on the Block
    New friends at ClickOkinawa
ClickOkinawa.com welcomes Gene Wing into the fold! Gene recently contacted me and we struck up a spirited round of correspondence and sharing of some photos from his days with the 3d Marine Division, Company "C", 7th Engineers. Seems that his outfit might well be thanked for many of the roads that went in up north around Ada Village back in the '50s.
Check out his collection of photos at the Gene Wing Gallery.
Roger e-mailed me to share an adventure he and a friend had on Okinawa when he was all of 12 years young.
I wonder how many others had similar experiences. His story reminded me of the day I took my sons to the annual search for WWII remains. We searched caves all day and had quite a time.
    Read Roger's adventure.
Craig Porter with F-102A aircraft out of Naha Air Base, 1950. Nice photos - and more to come!
Wayland Mayo has a very interesting site that includes his stories about his time on Okinawa in 1950.

    "Hi Mick,
I just wanted to take time to thank you for all the work you have done on behalf of the 9th. I think it turned out really great. What a great opportunity for guys like me to look back on some pretty good years. All those wonderful photos that the guys sent in really sparked some fine memories of what a great outfit the 9th really was. I made some good friends there, even though Okinawa was not exactly a tropical paradise. I remember the men of the 9th got along, and looked out for one another. They were a special group. I'm hoping that more of them will find the website. It sure would be nice to get in touch with more old friends. Again, and I know I speak for all of us when I say thanks. I'm fowarding a copy of this email to all the others that I have in my address book."

I'm worried about Harry now. I haven't heard from him in many, many weeks and we were working on getting a translation going on a Japanese soldier's diary that had come into his possession. If anyone knows how Harry's doing, please let me know! Mick
