"Around each entrance to a military base a cluster of bars, restaurants, steam baths and hotels have been constructed by Okinawan entrepreneurs. Sometimes the 'clubs' are lavish affairs, sometimes simple bars with English names or Okinawan corruptions of such names. One such was 'Riri's Bar', although Lily had long since retired with her hard-earned winnings!" [source: The Ryukyu Islands, McCune, 1975]
Bars and restaurants were inspected by the U.S. Army public health gurus and those that passed muster were awarded an "A-Sign" indicating it was fit to conduct business in a safe and sanitary manner.
