Note #1 - on page 18 of the Feb 23-Mar 1, 2014 the author erred in his explanation of the meaning of Noguni Sokan's name.
He was not the captain of the ship and instead was the "sokan" - a tradesman (or perhaps a clergyman) who burned incense at
Buddha’s shrine on the fantail of a tribute ship. ("Sokan" also refers to ranking among the Buddhist clergy.) "Noguni" was the village
from which he came. In the old days Ryukyuans who were not of nobility were not allowed to have family names.
Noguni Sokan was not of nobility thus he had no name per se and his true identity is to this day unknown.
