Comments: Hello, I'm making website about my home, Okinawa and current home, Minnesota for the college assigment. I was looking for the map of Okinawa and I launched to this site. I'm born and raised by Kadena Air Base, a place called Sunabe. My family is still living at the same place. Minnesota is so much different than Okinawa, but I'm enjoy living here. This is a nice homepage. I really enjoyed My Story. I'm planning to develop my website in both English and Japanese, so that people from both countries will be able to enjoy about US and Okinawa. Comments: I was stationed on Okinawa for 3 years in the Marine Corps. I enjoyed it alot. It's certainly changed alot since 1960 when I left. There are so many things that are not widely known about Okinawa or the original people and language. They had their own language. Not Japanese! The rice from Nago was taken for the Imperial family because it tasted so good. It even tastes different to this barbarian. To me it was sweeter. I hope to go back when I retire. I bookmarked the site so I can keep coming back. Thanks!

I wish that I'd have been able to see the island during the 1960s. I've heard so many stories about what it was like before Reversion - in particular, it didn't cost an arm and a leg to actually get out and experience the land! I got there the first time in 1972 and when I returned in 1986, although expensive, I paid dearly for the privilege of being accepted. But ya know, it was worth every penny and every yen! And I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat!!
Indeed, the Okinawan people are proudly different from the "mainlanders" and, in my opinion, have every right to be. I'd never want to offend mainland Japanese, but I learned the difference between them and the Okinawans right away!
Back to the 60's.... do you have any photos from those years that you'd consider sharing with me? I'd love to have a chance to scan some and post them on the pages!

Seems like we were there at different times. I was on island '72-75 and then again just in between your two tours! You left in '86, just when I was getting back there and I left in October of '90! Sorry I missed ya!! *grin*
My kids are buggin' us too.... my sons, 23 and 25 were both born on Okinawa - at the then-Army Hospital at Camp Kuwae. Now, as you know it's the Lester Naval Hospital and, if memory serves me correctly, it's now jointly operated by Navy and Air Force. Anyway, one of these days we'll all get to go back to the place that's so dear to me! *sigh* Just love that island!!!

What a surprise to see a picture of their first Christmas together on my computer!!! I'm sure you can picture how excited my parents were to see your site!
As you know, I don't have many memories of Okinawa being that I was only several weeks old...but I've always wanted to visit my hometown (that is if military brats actually have a hometown!) Anyway, your pictures were beautiful, and your stories were my favorite! I've always loved listening to my mom and dad's stories of those days. You have just added a new perspective for me!

As for hometowns.... being an Air Force brat myslf, my hometown was always the place where I was born too, so I guess Okinawa counts for you!! I have talked to people who have been back since we left the last time and they say the prices have really gone up. Comments: Thanks for the memories. Lived on Okinawa from May 1970 to May 1977. (I don't remember the yellow sub though I had to drive past it at least a gazillion times) I liked the pictures of Nagasuki (Nakagusuku) castle the best. I was originally in the army as an armed forces police traffic investigator (70 to 72) and then worked as a vending machine filler and repairman for the post exchange. I'm trying to remember if the Yellow Submarine was there in the early 70's when I was first on island. Maybe it wasn't until I went back in '86 that he'd set up shop along the perimeter fence. If you never saw him after a gazillion passes, then I defer to your better judgement! *grin*
